Dear Mr. Chad Smith, I am writing you in regard to the story that you wrote on 9/15/2008 called 'Probe into officer firings done'. I am writing this letter as an anonymous person because I don’t want to bring any more attention on myself. I am one of the 15 officers that were let go and I along with many of the other officers are appealing the decision because it was not the right form of disciplinary action taken. I have information that the same thing happened at the Alachua (Gainesville) Detention Center a few months before us, and all the officers received was an oral reprimand/ written reprimand which is what we would have received if the media would have been involved. The main person (Harry Hontz III) that caused this problem by downloading the virus that caused the whole investigation, informened the media because he did not wan t to go down by himself. In your story its says “Officially, the officers at the St. Johns Regional Juvenile Detention Center were dismissed because they violated the state Department of Juvenile Justice's Internet-use policy, which states employees are prohibited from using the Web for any personal tasks, such as checking personal e-mail accounts, sports scores or bank statements.” If that’s the case then many other, if not all officers should be let go. Supervisors like April Blount who was the sender of personal E-Mails that some of the officers received that were dismissed, because of her emails. Well since only the direct care staff members computers were checked, and not the supervisors computers this was not found. I know one supervisor was dismissed but that is because what they found on him happened before he became a supervisor. At the end of your statement it talks about sports scores and bank statements, if that’s the cause the whole facility, probably the whole department would be jobless. In ending, I along with some of the other officers have lost our job and now have been “black balled” from our careers in law enforcement because of checking an email, or looking up sports scores, or checking our bank account. I can see if it was going to an adult site, but some officers use their email for work related information, sports scores are checked so we can relay the scores to the youth at the facility for group discussion, and checking our bank accounts because you know the state can never get our pay right (overtime)! It’s not fair that all the officers including myself are lumped together because of a couple bad apples.&nb sp; I ask you to try and look at the story, from our side and see what you come up with. Thank You! Anonymous |
