Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County
We understand the frustration you must be feeling as you try to navigate the juvenile justice system in this state. What we are able to do is help families who believe that [their] child may be a victim of a tort while in the custody of the Department. We believe that if children are injured due to the deliberate indifference of the Department or it's subcontractors, then the child should be entitled to pursue that claim. If you believe that your child has been harmed while in the care of the Department, we will be happy to review the case. Only if we make the state pay for running an underfunded juvenile justice system will we ever convince the powers that be that it is more worthwhile to simply properly fund the system in the first place.
We recently came across your website and were very disturbed with stories of mistreatment of children in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice. We have developed expertise in representing delinquent youth over the past 20 years. We do not provide criminal representation. Instead we provide representation on appropriate placement and treatment for these youth. We also investigate any potential tort claims they may have and work to protect their rights.
Too often we will be contacted by parents of a delinquent youth, or an adult who was formerly a delinquent youth, asking us to help them investigate a claim and locate the appropriate attorney to represent them only to find out that the statute of limitations has run. It is understandable that when a family has been put on the defensive and is focused on the immediate safety of their child, they lose sight of the fact that their child may have a claim. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do for them at that point.
If you are in touch with these families and believe that we can be a resource for any of them, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will work with children regardless of their location. If you’d like to meet with us so that you can become more familiar with us, we’d be happy to do so.
